What it is about

The song is about seeing an ordinary place with fresh eyes. Three in the morning, Vauxhall Road, rain, railway arches, empty buses and the city between Thursday night and morning become a backdrop for a more personal realisation: sometimes stepping outside the usual routine changes what you notice.

The story behind it

The story moves through a London that has stopped performing for the daytime crowd. The narrator notices small, almost throwaway details and gradually realises that the freedom of the night has changed the way the city looks — and perhaps the way he looks at himself.
